VET HEALTH UPDATES

Canine Influenza Outbreak update
Source: Veterinary Public Health Division of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

By now most everyone knows that over 1,000 dogs in the Chicago area were infected. It was caused by a strain of the influenza virus called CIV H3N2. Until now, the only strain of this virus was H3N8.

There is no evidence that the current vaccine for strain H3N8 will protect your dog against this new strain. Fortunately, for us in southern California, no cases of CIV H3N2 have been reported.

Symptoms to watch for include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Most dogs recover within 2-3 weeks, severe and fatal cases of pneumonia are possible.

Many diseases can cause similar symptoms, so if they persist or seem significant, take your dog to your veterinarian for an exam.

Good hygiene goes a long way to prevent this. Any dog with the above symptoms should be isolated from other pets. Any clothing or utensils that have been contaminated by a dog with these symptoms should be thoroughly cleaned. This includes thoroughly washing your hands.

Feline Panleukopenia Outbreak in Los Angeles County
The Veterinary Public Health Program has been notified of more than 40 cats with confirmed cases of Panleukopenia in the areas of North Hollywood, Porter Ranch, and Lincoln Heights. The vast majority were kittens, and nearly all of them died. Due to the distance between reporting areas, we suspect this is a widespread outbreak, and more cases will likely occur.

NEWS

Laser Therapy is the use of specific wavelengths of light for treatment of many clinical conditions. Laser Therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses and doctors as far back as the 1970’s. Now, after FDA clearance in 2002, Laser Therapy is being used extensively in the United States. Treatments are completely safe and without side effects. During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved.
